Swinburne Innovation Challenge

In this activity – framed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals – high ability students in Years 10 to 12 from Government Schools will extend their learning in their chosen subject area as well as build key skills in teamwork, ways of thinking, problem solving and communication. Students will participate in an on-campus immersion with hands on workshops and lab sessions contributing to a team project that culminates in a pitch competition.

Utilising a blended model of delivery, students will spend half a day on campus to access our labs and teaching spaces and experience life as a university student. They will be taught by leaders in their field and supported by our School Program teaching staff.

By participating in the program, students will:

  • Extend knowledge in their chosen subject area
  • Build an understanding of diverse ways of thinking and innovation frameworks
  • Collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams to leverage different skills and perspectives

The program will run three times a year; 21 June 2023, 13 September 2023 and 29 November 2023. Prior to the event, students will form teams of 4-6 (where each student ideally has a different subject speciality/area of interest) and select a challenge focus from a list based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

After forming their teams and selecting the challenge focus, students will attend a half-day on-campus experience at the Swinburne University, Hawthorn Campus. This will comprise a 90-minute Applied Innovation workshop on working in multi-disciplinary teams, followed by a discipline-specific workshop for each student’s preferred specialty/area of interest.

Finally, students will regroup into their teams and share what they have each learned from the discipline workshops to kickstart their collaborative journey.

After the on-campus experience, students will return to school and work in their teams to refine their idea and create a final pitch. Final pitches are submitted in the form of a 1-2 min video and a panel of Swinburne experts will evaluate them and award prizes in a range of categories.
