School-based apprenticeships

Are you looking to get a head-start on your career? A school-based apprenticeship might be just the thing for you.

What are they?

A school-based apprenticeship is like any other apprenticeship or traineeship, but it begins while you are still studying at school, usually in years 10, 11 or 12.

You will have the opportunity to work with an employer (and yes, you will be paid!), all while participating in vocational training that contributes to a qualification. You’ll also spend some days at school like normal.

Why should I do one?

School-based apprenticeships are a great alternative for students who prefer hands-on learning, while still allowing you to complete your high school certificate. This means that there are still options for you once your apprenticeship is finished, including university or further vocational study. Or you can jump straight into a career.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible to undertake a school-based apprenticeship, you need to be of working age, and currently enrolled in school. If you’re under 18, you might also need your parents’ or guardians’ approval. Certain employers may also have their own requirements, such as needing a driver’s license.

If you are interested, you will need to find out whether your school can support school-based apprentices. If not, there may be other options – you’ll need to discuss this with your careers advisor.
